Building a Business on Someone’s Platform (Pros & Cons)
Finding a Job through Your Existing Network
🎧 On the pod: Building a business on the shoulders of other platforms
💡 THE BIG IDEA
🏗️ Building on Other People’s Platforms
Building on other platforms isn’t new.
Zynga built games on Facebook.
People run stores on Amazon.
Lots of apps are built just for Telegram.
Now, a new platform is growing: Farcaster — a social network built on crypto.
Many people haven’t heard of it.
But some already made millions building on it.
(The Optimism Show started there too!)
🧪 A Playground for Builders
Farcaster is like Facebook + Minecraft.
You can build almost anything.
It’s full of developers, marketers, and “vibe coders” trying new ideas.
And because it’s still quite small, you can connect with almost anyone on the platform.
In our latest episode, we talked to Sinaver, the founder of Payflow — an app for sending payments on Farcaster.
He built it from scratch.
It worked. People liked it.
But then Farcaster launched Warplet — their own payment solution.
Just like that, Sinaver’s year of work became much harder to grow.
🤔 Should you build something the platform might copy?
Or only build things they won’t touch?
It’s a hard call.“If you want to make money, don’t build what they’ll replace.”
🛠️ What Entrepreneurs Can Do
If you want to last, you have 2 paths:
Build tools and products the platform doesn’t plan to make
(like analytics, developer tools, or storage)Make something people love using
Even if the platform copies it, your fans might stay loyal.
“If you want to make money, don’t build what they’ll replace.”
🎯 Play the game, but know who owns the board
Building on platforms is fast and fun.
But they can change the rules anytime.
So if you're just there for the good vibes — enjoy.
But if you're building for the long term:
Pick your battles
Find the gaps
And always watch the platform’s roadmap
Whether it’s Farcaster, Amazon, or Shopify —
know who owns the land you’re building on, and complement rather than compete.
⭐ FUTURE OF WORK
